Metaphorical giants attack us every day.
Does someone you know intimidate you, or degrade your words and actions daily?
Is there a fearful situation stealing your breath in waves? Or a crisis so heavy you feel like a bug being squashed by an elephant?
These giants can be slayed with the same strength and boldness this boy from the Bible possessed. Learn young David’s secret and watch your giants fall before your eyes.
It is so easy to be in awe of David when reading his story in the Bible, or to skim it, since we’re familiar with it. Either way, we overlook his secret weapon.
The Bible Story
King David had a most unusual childhood. The youngest of eight boys during a time Israel and the Philistines were at odds left David tending his father’s sheep.
Living among the sheep and goats, protecting them day in and day out, meant David had plenty of time to spend with God.
Excitement flowed through his veins the day his dad asked him to take food and supplies to his brothers at their camp.
Little did he know how this day would change his life.
Deep down, he hoped to see some action.
Arriving, he soon felt the earth vibrate under his feet, before a shadow fell on the soldiers. A voice boomed from a man as tall as King Saul carrying a child on his shoulders.
Goliath’s threats were absurd! Yet, many Israelites ran away in fear, angering David even more.
David asked many questions and wasn’t detoured by his older brother’s chastisement.
and learned the reward for killing the giant.
David couldn’t tolerate this giant’s defiance of his country and his God. He believed this arrogance and untruths needed to come to a halt!
The king heard of David’s interest and sent for him.
Meanwhile, David couldn’t get Goliath out of his mind. “Why did he think he could get away with making fun of the one, true living God?” he thought. “God can squish a giant as easily as an ant.”
David volunteered to fight the giant. Due to Goliath’s massive battle experience and David’s lack of, King Saul opposed at first.
Quickly, David explained encounters he had with lions and bears as a shepherd, and how he rescued his sheep using only a club and his bare hands.
Thrusting his chest forward as his chin raised, David promised, “I’ll kill this pagan Philistine, for he has defied the armies of the living God! The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!”
Talk about boldness! King Saul thought so, too, for he agreed.
After young David tried on and rejected Saul’s armor, he found 5 smooth stones, dropped them in a bag, then crossed the valley carrying his shepherd’s staff and a sling
Goliath met him with a smirk on his face and taunting remarks to match, throwing curse words in the mix.
Unshaken, David’s confidence grew with each now famous word he spoke. “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, whom you have defied. Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. Then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! Everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!”
And he did.
One stone. Perfect aim. A sunken forehead causing a giant to fall face down.
David didn’t stop there. He used Goliath’s oversized sword to chop off his head, carried it to the king, and collected his reward.

David’s Boldness
Not every boy David’s age could be so bold, so how could he?
It was because of what He knew. He knew is God was the one, true living God – not one of these crazy idols’ foreigners worshipped.
He knew God had chosen the Israelites and had rescued them from all danger.
He knew degrading the Creator of the Universe who had always been there for him and his people was wrong. It angered David more than someone talking bad about his mama.
When facing danger as a teenage shepherd boy, he gained firsthand experiences of God’s power. He knew how big God was and wanted everyone to know – not Goliath’s lies.
David trusted his knowledge, experience and convictions
Giving him the strength, boldness, and courage he needed.
And the secret?
He knew God was more than able, and willing, to fight the battle for him. All he had to do was be a willing vessel to be used.
How well do you know God? His Son, Jesus? Do you listen to the Holy Spirit?
KNOW THIS!
God will fight your battles if you surrender them. He will slay the giants in your life.
God will lead and direct your path as you place your trust in Him
Let God do the showing off so others will believe in Him, know the Truth, and He is glorified.
